How to Forage: Elderberries, Hawthorn Berries, Rose Hips, Wild fruit and what to do with them
What you will learn
This is a community building class where we go foraging together! I love foraging, you love foraging, let’s go foraging together!
This is an all day class and a super informal one as I want to create a gathering of like minded people in a bustle of foraging and cooking.
We will meet here at ORTO Farm and then car pool our way to various sites. Along the way to our sites we will look out for wild fruit and stop along the way. To make this a safe foraging experience we will car pool with strictly not more than three cars in the pool. Bring your baskets, secateurs and gloves. Hats and long sleeved shirts (slip slop slap) and water bottles and be prepared to share your car in the pool or to become a passenger.
Morning – Harvest and Car Pool
Afternoon – Process some of our harvest
We will process a little of what we have harvested and share the remainder of the harvest between us to take home.
This class will involve:
- identifying wild edible plants
- foraging wild edibles
- how to harvest safely
- what to do with your harvest
- how to process your harvest
- how to preserve your harvest
Let’s have lunch together. I will provide a vegetarian lunch of flat breads, salad and various baked vegetable fillings. We will break for lunch at about 1pm.
What to Expect
I will facilitate the day and our activities. As there will be up to 15 of us for this class, I will need individuals in the group to take turns at playing ‘audience’ and ‘theatre makers’.
In other words, during the harvest we can all pitch in at the same time, but once we are back in the kitchen I will need individuals to take turns with being active and passive participants as too many cooks in the kitchen will make for a tricky experience. Hence be prepared to spend some time sitting and observing and other times chopping, cooking and doing.
I can’t wait! Much huge care and arrivederci! Mara
