How to use Natural Dyes to Colour Cloth
Join the extremely talented Heather Thomas in this very informative Natural Dyeing Class.
This class will Introduce you to the world of natural dyeing. Learn how to effectively dye wool and cotton cloth with plants using techniques which you can easily recreate at home.
Understand the mordanting process, which uses mineral salts to help the colour bond so the colours won’t wash out. Experience how to experiment with plants around your home kitchen and garden to see what hidden colours may be revealed.
We will produce samples of colour on different types of cloth which you can take home with recipes to help you recreate the colours and scale up to dye clothing in the future.
Also a cotton tea towel and bandana to dye on the day using various techniques.
We will begin the class with a brief tour of ORTO farm, then dive deep into Natural Dyeing. We will take a break to share a vegetarian lunch made here at ORTO, hot drinks and grazing platter throughout the day, before diving deep once more into colour, texture and boiling pots of dye.
