At this time of the year I try to focus on replenishing my soil with nutrients, sowing green manures, cleaning out summer plants, and pruning berry plants. The largest garden bed has been cleared and broad beans sown to increase the nitrogen levels in the soil. I will also add a small amount of sulphate of potash beside the emerging broad bean seedlings, and water it in. Sulphate of potash contains potassium an essential macro nutrient. For the other garden beds I will place a handful of compost instead, and if my compost quality is good then the broad beans will do well here too.
